Parotidectomy

The parotid gland is one of the major salivary glands in the body located at the angle of the jaw below the ear. The gland comprises of a superficial and deep lobe. The facial nerve (nerve supplying the muscles of the face) travels between the two lobes. Excision of the gland (Parotidectomy) is required for tumors of the parotid gland or sometimes for recurrent infections in the gland. Depending on the location of the lesion, a superficial (i.e. removal of the superficial lobe only) or a total parotidectomy (removal of the whole gland) may be required.
